Douglas R. Legg

Born July 1, 1930, in Portland, Oregon, Lloyd E. and Gertrude M. (Kuckenberg) Legg, Legg Douglas Reid died June 8, 2011, in Ashland, Oregon, educated in Catholic schools from grade to Portland, Ore., Columbus, Georgia and Leavenworth, Kansas, Doug is a graduate Portland Catholic Central High School in 1948. He attended the University of Notre Dame on an NROTC scholarship for four years, graduated and was commissioned in the U.S. Navy on June 1, 1952. Subsequently, he served two combat tours in Korea, then returned to Notre Dame to complete an MA in history.In 1957 he entered the University of Oregon, and worked on a doctorate in history before joining the faculty at what is now Southern Oregon University in 1962. He served in a variety of teaching and administrative positions until his retirement in 1990.

A much admired member of the department of history, its main activity was teaching one-year course in Western civilization to incoming students. Thousands have taken this course from him over the years. His specialty was working the top division of English history, and often both European history and Russian / Soviet.On occasion he offered courses in the program SOC / SOU honors, where his teaching has become a device. He was particularly interested in the long career of Winston Churchill.

Doug served as an officer in the Naval Reserve, from which he retired as commander in 1990. In addition, he was involved in a number of ministries and committees at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church in Ashland from 1962 until his death.

By August 1963, he married his beloved wife, Jeanne-Marie Reiff, who survives. They have traveled abroad and on numerous occasions.Additional survivors include his brother, Ronald L. Legg, and his nephew, Richard D. Legg, both of Vancouver, Wash.

A funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, July 28, 2011, 11:00 at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, 987 Hillview Drive, Ashland, Oregon, with a reception in the parish hall after Mass with Inurnment Military honors will be at Eagle Point National Cemetery, at 15.00, following the reception.
