Children explore the world of painting in summer art program

CHERAW – “Let’s Paint,” is exactly what the kids did in a recent art workshop hosted by the Cheraw Arts Commission. Let’s Paint, June 7-9, was the first workshop in the Summer Arts Exploration series, a program designed to introduce children to many forms of art and allow them to explore areas of visual, performing and culinary arts.

Artist and Cheraw resident Gloria Turner, instructed the students in a variety of paintings techniques, helping them to each create their own masterpiece. Turner is known for her watercolors and has been featured in various art exhibits throughout the region and has commissioned many paintings that hang in homes and offices throughout the United States, Germany and Canada.

Other programs in the visual art series included the “Playing with Paper (mache)” workshop June 20-23 that taught paper mache techniques with instructor Affra Gibbs and and the upcoming workshop “You Rock,” a rock painting class where with instructors Gina and Miracle Bowles is planned for July 12-14.

Young artists can also experience sculpting in “Any Way, Shape, or Form,” a workshop led by artist Neil McClendon teaching the basics of sculpture on July 25-28.

The Summer Arts Exploration series culinary arts program, Kids in the Kitchen, allows children to try their hand at cooking international dishes with “Around the World in Three Days,” to be held at the Wine Factory in Cheraw. Originally scheduled June 13-14, the class is being rescheduled for a later date.

The performing arts series in July and August will allow children to perform on stage with a music camp and theater camp. The music camp will allow campers to explore music with a various instruments, and instructed by Kris Houser and Patrick Davis from July 18-21.

The second part of the performing art series and wrapping up the summer art series is the theater camp, led by instructors from children’s theater group, Porkchop Productions. The camp, scheduled August 1-5, will help aspiring actors learn basic acting skills and will end with a special performance.

Whimsy Paper Mache: A Sweet Chattanooga Gallery the Cake Gallery

Tonya and Steven prepared wedding cakes for my daughter's wedding on May 22, 2009. Both the bride's cake (white with strawberry filling) and the groom's cake (carrot) were without a doubt the tastiest and best decorated wedding cakes that I have ever experienced. Thank you soooooooo much. I had many positive comments on the cakes. You are the best. I ordered a birthday cake for my daughter's 18th birthday party. Because of past experiences with the spelling of her name I went to great lengths to make sure her name was spelled correctly. To my shock and surprise when the cake got to the church they had spelled her name Pasty. This was not a cheap cake. I spent $209 for this birthday cake because I really wanted this to be a special cake but unfortunately it was not. I cannot recommend this establishment to anyone. My experience was not a good one.
