Three students earn 'Top Reader' awards at Siebert Elementary
"Catch the Reading Buzz - Siebert Has a Hive of Good Readers" was the theme for Siebert Elementary's Accelerated Reading program for 2010-2011. Students set new reading records for participation and individual accomplishment.
Colin Witt, a fifth grade student, set a school AR record of 1,039.6 points on his way to be named Siebert's "Top Reader." Witt received an iPod nano in recognition of his achievement.
Fourth grade student Jacob Telgenhoff placed second in the "Top Reader" competition, earning 653.7 points along with the honor of being the honorary batboy during the Great Lakes Loons game on July 22. Telgenhoff will also receive four tickets to the Loons game, compliments of Kim Walden, Farm Bureau Insurance.
Irshad Husain, a third grade student, took third place with 496.1 points. Husain received a $30 gift card for Barnes & Noble.
The names of all three "Top Reader" honorees will be added to a plaque displayed on the Wall of Fame Bulletin Board in the Siebert front hall. Each student also received a framed certificate commemorating their achievement.
"I am so proud of our students," said Ronia Lawson, a parent volunteer who has coordinated Siebert's AR program for four years. "They have really worked hard this year. Last year we had 286 students in our AR program. That jumped to 475 this year with the addition of new students. I was excited to see that we more than doubled the number of points earned last year!"
The AR Program provides teachers and students a fun way to promote reading at home and in the classroom. Students read books and then take computerized quizzes at school to earn points, which can be traded for prizes in the AR store. Throughout the school year, students are rewarded with incentive prizes such as popcorn parties, AR T-shirts and shopping trips to the AR store. When students earn 125 points, their photos are posted on the "Wall of Fame" bulletin board. These top readers -- 68 this year -- also receive an invitation to the end-of-year pizza party.
Students earned a total of 31,206.8 points this year up from 14,185.6 points in 2009-2010.
"We had 94 out of 100 first-graders reading and testing this year," Lawson said. "I have never had that high a percentage of first grade readers before!"
The three top readers were honored with a pizza party along with the other 65 students who earned 125 or more AR points. Those attending were:
First grade - Abby Rey 127 points, Andrew Gilbert 169.6 points.

I bought a whole lot of clear vinyl to cover up my bulletin boards at school. What do they have at Cliff's that you can't find anywhere else? They have a lot of everything. It's like going to Target but better. Why do you shop at Cliff's Variety Store?
Before you leave home, buy a bulletin board and decorate it with your family pictures, messages and contact info from your friends, posters, and anything else that reminds you of home. Finally, pack a small health kit with things like Emergen-C to
