Dayton Police Department seeks NRA Foundation grant for new equipment
With financial support from a nonprofit guardian of the Second Amendment, the Dayton Police Department will bolster its law enforcement toolbox.
The department is preparing a grant application to the NRA Foundation, a nonprofit arm of the National Rifle Association. Regional grant monies that could support the department and other entities in the foundation’s South Texas region stem from fundraising banquets that the also nonprofit South Texas Friends of the NRA organizes, one of which will be held Aug. 16 in Beaumont.
Every banquet ticket sold, each item donated for bidding and all of the underwriters will support a cause that could aid the Dayton Police Department.
If awarded, a $25,000 grant would help the Dayton Police Department protect and serve the community by fulfilling its equipment wish list.
“We’re looking at getting 700 to 800 radios, some Tasers and some evidence equipment,” Dayton Police Chief Pete Douzat said.
Knowledge of the grant originated from the inaugural South Texas Gun, Knife and Coin Expo held June 25-26 at the Dayton Community Center. An NRA representative attended.
“My administrative secretary, Tammy Alexander, was at the gun show,” the chief said. “The guy from the NRA said something to her and told her about these grants. That’s how we found out about it.
“Anytime we can find something like that, we’re glad to be able to do it.”
Half of the money that the South Texas Friends of the NRA raises remains in the region to be distributed in the form of grants awarded to law enforcement agencies, education programs, ROTC, 4-H, shooting sports and other types of applicants.
The Friends’ overhead is 4 cents on the dollar, so 96 percent of the local funds are poured into grants, South Texas NRA field representative Liz Foley said.
“We’re very proud of our low overhead in that it allows us to put absolutely as much money back into the grant programs as possible so that our donors can be confident that their money is being used wisely and for what it was intended for,” Foley said.
The other half of the proceeds raised in Dayton’s region supports the NRA Foundation’s national programs. Those national programs include youth firearm safety, hunter education, range development and improvement, women’s training seminars and wildlife conservation efforts. The NRA Foundation’s grants benefit more than 180 programs.
Delegates from each of the two dozen eligible 2011 South Texas Friends of the NRA banquets will meet to determine recipients and grant amounts.

SOG Donation to NRA Law Enforcement: Mini Pentagon
As we told you last month, SOG Specialty Knives & Tools made a donation to NRA's Law Enforcement Division for the 2011 National Police Shooting Championships (NPSC) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In addition to the TigerStripe Trident we mentioned, the Mini Pentagon fixed blade knife will also be making an appearance.
With both a straight and serrated edge, the mini gives the user the ability to tackle a multitude of cutting tasks. And the Kraton polymer grip allows for an outstanding combination of grip, balance and feel. The NRA Law Enforcement logo on the blade isn't a bad touch either.
"Everyone started digging through the packages when the SOG donation arrived," said NRA Law Enforcement Director Glenn Hoyer. "I know of at least one Program Coordinator who had a hard time putting the Mini Pentagon back on the prize table, but those are for the men and women who compete at the National Police Shooting Championship."
Hoyer guarantees that the TigerStripe Trident and Mini Pentagon will be on the prize table in Albuquerque come September. If you're a law enforcement officer who'd like to see that table and compete for the NPSC title, go to the Championship's website and sign up now.
