People look forward to it all year their chance to escape the responsibilities of daily life and live as writers, if only for a couple of days They bask the glow of their own creativity, and that glow follows them home.
That's the magic of the Clarksville Writers Conference, happening July 14 and July 15 at Austin Peay State University. The deadline to register for this year's conference is July 6, but people who register by June 29 get discounted fees.
"The very first year I came to the writers conference I had a check list in my mind as to what I wanted to know or be able to do to become a successful writer," said conference attendee Shirley Howard. "After that first year I checked off everything on that list."
The conference features workshops presented by poets, novelists, journalists, memoirists, editors and literary agents. It includes choices among multiple topics and presenters for five sessions each day, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., as well as lunch served in the ballroom in APSU's Morgan University Center. The first day's activities are capped with a "Meet the Authors" reception and banquet at Clarksville Country Club.
Howard said she gets something new out of the conference each year, and that's why she keeps coming back.
"The conference is really designed for people who have workday lives, who have an interest in writing, be it poetry or memoir or fiction," said Chris Burawa, chair of Clarksville Writers Conference and executive director of APSU's Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts. "There are so many conferences out there that cater to graduates of MFA programs. We want people who scribble at the kitchen table or are writing their memoir about life in Tennessee."
Billyfrank Morrison has written four books, but it didn't come naturally. Each year at the Clarksville Writers Conference, he is exposed to new ideas from "a buffet of accomplished authors" and gains skills to overcome what he says is a lack of natural writing ability.
"Their presentations are motivational and I always leave anxious to get back to unfinished writing projects or to launch new ones," Morrison said.

Aklanon Literature Archive: Tips in Poetry Writing
Abstract words refer to concepts or feelings, like liberty, happy, love. A person cannot see, touch or taste any of these things. These abstracts words are common in greetings cards. That is the reason why poems in these cards do not reach the textbooks, particularly in anthologies. Many of the words used in greeting cards are clichés. Simply said, generally, texts in greeting cards have no poetic value. Another thing which I check in my poem is the injection of moral lesson. This device has been used in many of the traditional poems. I was once a judge in Hiligaynon poetry contest, and I noticed this mistake in many of the entries. So avoid this, let us leave that giving of moral lesson to the preachers. Our business as a poet is to present what we see, hear, feel, smell, imagine, and dream of. And if possible, inject a little opinion and leave the rest to the readers. There are times when you cannot produce a line for your poem. Do not worry. Ideas come like seasons: rainy season and dry season. And when rainy season comes, try as much as possible to capture in paper those bountiful ideas. And when the dry season comes, just relax. Walk around. Smell the flowers. See a movie. Listen to your favorite radio stations. Read a novel. Or just lie down. And in your relaxation, you will be surprised that you have a new line to work on.
