Roseville police strive to improve communication
Just shy of four months since taking the oath of office, Roseville Police Chief Daniel Hahn is already making an impact in the department.
Hahn, 42, spent 23 years with the Sacramento Police Department, during which time he made community-oriented policing a priority.
Now, Roseville police officers say Hahn has brought that philosophy to his new post.
“Roseville PD has always been service-oriented, but Chief Hahn has certainly brought an increased focus to building relationships between police and the community,” said Dee Dee Gunther of the Roseville Police Department.
Wherever a safe neighborhood exists or a drastic reduction of crime occurs, it’s not just because of police but because of active residents, Hahn told the Press Tribune when he took office in March.
Gunther said as part of the reorganization, the department is forming a new communications team to improve both internal and external communications.
“Because we’re a 24/7 department, it’s sometimes difficult to keep everyone within the department abreast of incidents,” Gunther said.
The team, made up of the community services sergeant, the crime analyst, a community service officer and the public information officer, will be responsible for looking at crime reports and giving officers timely information so they know what the most recent crime trends are, and where to direct their patrol and problem solving efforts, Gunther said.
Another way the department is reaching out to build a better relationship with the community is by sending weekly e-mail bulletins from the police department.
“An important part of our department’s community-policing effort is to provide more information to residents about what crimes are occurring in their areas,” Gunther said.
Residents can already look at maps and charts of crimes in their areas through the Roseville Police Department’s website, and now they can also sign up for regular e-mail updates on crime and police activity in their area.
“Chief Hahn has set a very high priority on communicating with the community, particularly at the neighborhood level,” Gunther said. “He’s reorganizing the department to add more help to our communications efforts.”
