101st Airborne Division becoming Afghan experts
U.S. Army Sgt. Ginifer Spada, a broadcast journalist assigned to the Public Affairs Office for 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Task Force Bastogne, poses with an Afghan girl who wants to be a journalist during International WomenÕs Day at the governorÕs house in Jalalabad in eastern AfghanistanÕs Nangarhar Province March 8. Spada is on her second combat deployment as an Army journalist. / U.S. Army/Sgt. Ginifer Spada Though they would have their division nearly whole (later needs would require some adjusting between regional commands), Campbell and his team still had to prepare to work and fight well with others, including joint forces, Polish and French counterparts and the Afghan National Army. Combined military and civilian capabilities meant interagency cooperation as well. Nongovernmental agencies would also play a role. The 101st Airborne had already begun to deploy even as Unified Endeavor was going on. The 3rd Brigade Combat Team had begun deploying in January 2010 and units were nearly all in theater by the end of February. The 1st and 2nd Brigade Combat Teams, as well as the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, followed on. Between summer 2010 and the winter 2011, the 4th Brigade Combat Team, the 101st Sustainment Brigade and the 159th Combat Aviation Brigade would rotate in. The 101st Headquarters was well stocked with Afghanistan and Iraq experience, from the commander on down. That experience would lead Campbell, a former brigade commander in RC East, to a realistic assessment of what he was coming into. In May 2010, he said of the surge of which his division was a part, "I think just like Iraq, (the insurgents) know we're going to bring in additional forces. The division came in with a clearly defined mission: Conduct combined action counterinsurgency operations, protect the population, increase the competency, capacity and credibility of Afghan institutions, and defeat insurgent forces in partnership with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and in close coordination with joint, interagency and multinational partners. It wasn't just his maneuver commanders that faced a tough slog, either. All facets of the aviation asset attack, medevac and support were worked to the limit helping ground forces overcome what many called "the worst terrain with the worst road network in the world." The 101st Sustainment Brigade contended with the same problem as they worked to keep Forward Operating Bases and Combat Outposts supplied, among their many other chores, projects and emergency missions. In any conversation with Campbell regarding the Afghanistan mission, the Afghan term, "shohna ba shohna," "shoulder to shoulder," is bound to come up. Another phrase that will definitely come up is, "two steps forward, one step back." Around those two phrases was built a structure resembling progress that was solid enough for others, including Afghans, to begin to buy into. Campbell knew the enemy would try to continue the tactic as long as it worked, but he and others saw it as a sign of weakness and a last-ditch strategy by an enemy that was running out of ideas. Also, he was bound by his mission and unwilling to let the enemy dictate to him. For Campbell, Afghan partnership was a long-term strategy for winning a war he repeatedly said the military could not kill its way out of. What they got instead was both barrels of the combined 101st Airborne and ANA forces, which hunted down Taliban and Haqqani leadership and destroyed the weapons caches the enemy needed for its traditional late-spring offensive. The dividends of that were apparent later as a promised offensive appeared to fizzle and some enemy combatants looked for ways to get out of the war. On March 29, Operation Strong Eagle III turned deadly as nearly 200 Taliban fighters, in a rare massing of forces, used weather and the temporary unavailability of aviation to hammer the "No Slack" 2nd Battalion of the Bastogne Brigade following an air assault into the home turf of a Taliban leader in Kunar Province. Six soldiers of the battalion died in a hail of gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades. The last two months saw additional casualties, including the deaths of six members of the 101st Sustainment Brigade at the hands of a suicide bomber in ANA uniform, but the Taliban had been weakened, its promised revenge was unspectacular in light of its threats and boasts, and the reputation of the 101st Airborne Division remained firmly fixed as preeminent. After a year of nearly non-stop operations, the division had removed over 6,000 Taliban and other fighters from the battlefield, more than 4,000 of them permanently. In doing so, they had lost, as of May 19 (the date of the change of responsibility to 1st Cavalry Division), 124 of their own. The full KIA count for the division now stands (as of June 3) at 133.
