Liven up your living space with new decorative hardware
Grabbing cereal from a kitchen cabinet isn’t ultra-glamorous. But it could be. </p><p>According to home designers and product specialists, decorative hardware can gussy up your kitchen and turn heads just like colorful, 5-inch Christian Louboutins. </p><p>“Picking the right decorative hardware is like picking the perfect pair of shoes for a dress,” says Adrienne Morea, CEO and creative director of Los Angeles-based Atlas Homewares. “It’s your mark of uniqueness.”</p><p>Morea says current fashions play a large part in the finishes for Atlas products.</p><p>The most common — but not necessarily the most fashionable — decorative hardware material is satin nickel, she says. </p><p>John Hensley, owner of Locks & Pulls in Overland Park, is all too familiar with nickel knobs and pulls. But he thinks the satin nickel trend is beginning to lose its luster. </p><p>“Neutral tones and true bronzes are hot,” Hensley says. “People are paying a lot of money to make things look old.”</p><p>However, Hensley says that most customers can choose hardware made of alternative materials such as bronze, steel and copper with an antique brass finish as opposed to genuine antique brass to cut costs in half. </p><p>“At least 50 percent of our customers already have an idea of what they are looking for when they come in,” Hensley says. “Eight out of 10 times, they are looking to replace brass.” </p><p>The shiny, golden brass that Hensley’s customers are getting rid of is what Genevieve Gorder, HGTV “Design Star” judge, calls “Donald Trump brass.” </p><p>“Brass is a rising star in lamps, tabletops and pulls,” Gorder says. “But it’s not the ‘trashy-brassy’ that we left off in the ’80s.”</p><p>Modern brass has lost its often offensive sheen and presents a more pleasing hue that works with brown, black, cream and white cabinetry. </p><p>According to Gorder, another hot look in hardware is wrought iron. </p><p>“Dull black goes with anything,” she says.</p><p>Gorder works with clients who want a new look that complements the character of their homes and highlights elements of the past. She suggests searching architectural salvage stores for unusual items to use as decorative hardware. She also says that using Grandma’s old brooch could be crafty on a vanity drawer in a bathroom. </p><p>Morea agrees that using lower-cost items for hardware can add sensible spice to an interior space. </p><p>“Hardware, art, flooring and paint all make a difference in a room and can make it extraordinary and eclectic,” Morea says. </p><p><strong><span class="infobox-head">CREATIVE USES FOR DECORATIVE HARDWARE </span></strong></p><p>Fancy hardware can do more than just deck your drawers. It can serve as a sassy hook for a frying pan or bath towels, replace the traditional window treatment tieback, form an eclectic huddle of artwork on a bare wall and perk up vintage furniture. </p><p>Think of decorative hardware as “cultural polka dots,” Genevieve Gorder says. </p><p>“Cluster them as wall décor,” she says. </p><p>The Hobby Lobby in Mission has a section devoted to decorative hardware, offering knobs, pulls and handles for crafty purposes. The selection includes ceramic knobs in a variety of colors, glass pulls that look like diamonds, metal knobs with tarnished and trendy finishes and monogrammed knobs that put a definitive stamp on your space. </p><p><strong><span class="infobox-head">CHOOSING THE RIGHT PULLS AND KNOBS </span></strong></p><p>Practical, functional hardware is important in the areas of the home that get the most use, such as kitchens and bathrooms. But sensible drawer pulls shouldn’t squish your style. </p><p>Genevieve Gorder offers some hardware hints: </p><p>•Know the exact measurements of cabinet doors or drawers before choosing hardware. </p><p>•Pick the right placement for the hardware. The location of the knob or pull should be smart and also resemble a work of art. </p><p>•Place your hands on the hardware for a true test of function. Sampling sometimes equals a satisfied customer. </p><p>•Choose a classic form that stands the test of time and has a “soulful shine” to reflect your personality.</p><p><strong><span class="infobox-head">TIPS TO KEEP YOUR CABINETS TRES CHIC </span></strong></p><p>Follow the advice below from Adrienne Morea for drawers that are well-dressed.</p><p><span style="line-height:0"><br clear="all" /></span><table border="0" class="story-table"> <tr class="story-table-even-row"><td><strong>What’s hot</strong></td><td><strong>What’s not</strong></td></tr> <tr class="story-table-odd-row"><td>Mixed media styles </td><td>Matchy-matchy styles</td></tr> <tr class="story-table-even-row"><td>Antique brass</td><td> Polished brass</td></tr> <tr class="story-table-odd-row"><td>Long and sleek pulls</td><td> Short and chunky pulls</td></tr> <tr class="story-table-even-row"><td>Square knobs</td><td> Standard circle knobs</td></tr> <tr class="story-table-odd-row"><td>Oversized hardware</td><td> Minimal hardware </td></tr> <tr class="story-table-even-row"><td>Architectural shapes </td><td>Graphic shapes </td></tr> <tr class="story-table-odd-row"><td>Natural finishes</td><td> Faux finishes </td></tr> </table></p><p><strong><span class="infobox-head">RESOURCES </span></strong></p><p>•<strong>Locks & Pulls</strong>, 10333 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, <a href="http://www.locks-pulls.net">www.locks-pulls.net</a>, 913-381-1335</p><p>•<strong>Hobby Lobby</strong>, 6721 Johnson Drive, Mission, <a href="http://www.hobbylobby.com">www.hobbylobby.com</a>, 913-432-4505 </p><p>•<strong>Atlas Homewares</strong>, <a href="http://www.atlashomewares.com">www.atlashomewares.

Confession of an auto salvage-yard junkie - PT Cruiser Forum
I spent some time Friday afternoon at the local pick-a-part salvage yard visiting some old PT Cruiser friends. The yard had some new arrivals, the first post-2005 models that I have seen there. I wasn't able to locate a couple of the cars mentioned on the location print-out, apparently because whole neighborhoods had been clear-cut to the gravel and hauled off to the crusher. Scrap metal prices are up. I've been trying to find an '06 or up Vert for a while now. Broke off a trim piece that runs over the back above the trunk, seals down the back of the vert top. Four screws. It was catching on my vert top and one day when raising it,... kablam, the damned thing busted off and no fixing it. So, hunt and peck but so far no joy. If you happen to see one, please let me know!
