The lush green carpet on which important national league matches used to be played in the 1990s is now worn and tattered. The penalty boxes are almost barren .
It does not appear that the grass is watered regularly. The ground only hosts first division and womens matches, and not those of the I-League or the Calcutta Football League super division.
Tapan Sarkar, a member of the South Calcutta Sports Development Council, which is in charge of the upkeep of the playing area, admitted that the ground did not get enough water sometimes. The CIT is in charge of water supply to the ground and they cannot provide us enough water, he claimed.
Track & velodrome
The cinder track has become obsolete and needs to be replaced with a modern, synthetic one. Cycling being one of the events at the National Games, the velodrome between the track and the galleries the only one in the state till it was pulled down needs to be rebuilt.
The wooden benches for the coach and reserves are in a shambles.
Stands
Creepers and saplings have grown freely on the concrete galleries. Reaching the VIP stand is quite a task with giant bushes blocking the approach. Once there, one realises 90 per cent of the wooden benches are gone. No one seems to know where they disappeared and when. The VIP stand is thus no different from any other concrete gallery.
We have six malis out of eight sanctioned posts. Its certainly not enough for such a big ground and such big galleries. We need at least 15 malis , said Sarkar.
Players rooms
Last Friday, a Calcutta Football League match between womens teams from Howrah and Nadia was played on the ground. On a hot and humid afternoon, the players, who had to board trains around 11am for the 3.30pm match, had been allotted two stinking rooms under a gallery. One of the rooms had a fan whose blades were hardly moving. The fan in the other room did not work.
The toilet attached to one of the rooms was filthy. The other room did not have an attached toilet and players had to use the one in the corridor.
