Where to Ski and Snowboard this Fourth of July Weekend
God Bless America! And God Bless the U.S. Ski Resorts that are still and/or will be opening back up just to celebrate the birth of our country for the July 4th weekend. For those who aren’t fans of the “God Blessing” variety, I shall say instead, Thank you Mother Nature for your American Snowy Splendor!
This 2010/2011 season has had impeccable snow conditions in the western mountain states. According to Dan Hansen at Mammoth Mountain, “It started snowing in November and didn’t really stop until early June.” Besides Mammoth, Lake Tahoe resorts like Alpine Meadows were also receiving many late dumps the first and second weekends of June.
Unlike Mammoth Mountain who has remained opened, many Tahoe resorts closed for the season. However the good news is many resorts in Tahoe and elsewhere around the United States are re-opening especially for the Fourth of July weekend. Squaw has even postponed their famous Lake Cushing Crossing that’s now scheduled for July 3.
As a reminder, this is not an El Niño year that customarily brings in massive amounts of snow for the western United States. It is the year of “anti El Niño” or La Niña. So this snow gift from Mother Nature (or those would like to thank God if that strikes your fancy) should be thanked for and thanked again. Then when you are done thanking, just going ahead and thank whomever you’d like again. I’m going to thank La Niña since it sounds the sexiest.
So where do you celebrate this Fourth of July weekend on the slopes? Below is a list, in no particular order of where you can get out and do your last couple of runs while celebrating our country's independence. I will be expecting you all to be wearing your Uncle Sam hats and red, white and blues while skiing that sweet Spring Ski corn. Trust me when I say I have spies at the resorts to make sure you deliver some spirit!

Since the year 2000, over 4,300 Palestinian and 1,000 Israeli lives have been claimed by the escalating conflict in the region. In 2007 it emerged that a small group of young men were surfing in Gaza, sharing battered surfboards they had attained prior to the siege. Word traveled north to Israel, and that same year, a mixed group of Israelis and Americans delivered a dozen boards to their Palestinian counterparts.
In the spring of 2008, they would attempt to deliver another 23 surfboards into Gaza. By this time the situation in Gaza had deteriorated further, the border still sealed, with military activity a near daily occurrence.
“God Went Surfing With the Devil” charts the difficulties and dangers encountered by surfers in the region. Along the way it speaks to Israelis, Arab-Israelis, and Palestinians affected by the violence, charting their daily struggle to supersede the conflict through the joys of surfing.
