State colleges lower graduation requirements
Graduating from Nebraska's state colleges just got a little easier.
The Nebraska State College System, which oversees campuses in Chadron, Peru and Wayne, now will allow students to graduate with 120 credit hours instead of 125.
NSCS Chancellor Stan Carpenter announced Friday that the system's trustees had approved the change this month. He said it was designed to reduce student debt and make it easier to graduate in four years.
Administrators will be charged with designing degree programs that require no more than 120 credits and no more than 42 general education hours. Exemptions will be made for some teacher education programs, accounting programs and other degrees for which having more than 120 hours is required for accreditation. Other exemptions must be approved by the trustees.
Carpenter said making it easier for students to graduate on time was key in making the decision.
"We want students to successfully complete college and enter the workforce in a timely manner, without compromising the quality of their education," he said in a news release.
Carpenter said the changes had been discussed widely at the three campuses and he was confident they wouldn't affect the preparedness of his graduates.
Several colleges have moved to the 120-credit system, Carpenter said. Some degree programs at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln require only 120 hours.
Roger Breed, state commissioner of education and a member of the state colleges board, said he strongly supported the board's decision.
Breed, who co-chairs the state's P-16 Initiative to encourage Nebraska youths to attend college, said, "The focus of the P-16 Initiative is to ensure that students can successfully travel through all stages of their educational journey, from preschool through college. Not only must we increase the college-going rate, we must also ensure that our students graduate in a timely manner."
Almost 9,000 students attend either Chadron, Peru or Wayne state colleges.

Although Peru has a representative democratic system, it is hard to tell if it is really representing the wants and needs of the majority. Despite the fact that it has had a constant economic boost in the last decade – reaching 9.1% last November – this growth is not reflected in all the areas of the country. It has a high poverty rate of around 34.8%, social expenditure is half the average spent by other Latin American countries, and the standard of public services, such as health and education, is poor. With these facts in mind, it is hard to believe we’ve had a relatively stable democracy throughout the last decade. Economic growth is not synonymous with sustainable development. And although it can contribute to society as a whole, in the long run, if it is not well managed and the benefits are not well distributed, it will only create a greater gap between classes. When such injustice is taking place in a country, it is not surprising that those whose rights and needs are being ignored decide to vote for less traditional parties, whose policies and promises but sound convincing enough to make these excluded citizens feel part of the system. Peru’s future is uncertain, as none of the two candidates competing for power have reliable records. But if this complex scenario has anything to offer us, let it be this lesson: it is not possible for a country to develop sustainably without involving the whole of its population in the process. It is when individuals are provided with equal opportunities that they can develop themselves fully and moreover, develop as a nation. When the opposite happens, social conflict arises and democracy ends up at stake.
