Wildfire burns more than 21000 acres; brief showers do little
Facts THINGS TO KNOW Information about the Holly Shelter Game Land fire as of Thursday evening:
• More than 21,300 acres have burned, and the fire was 10-percent contained.
• Thunderstorms moved through the area bringing winds that kicked up flames near Atkinson and caused the fire to jump containment lines.
• Evacuations still are voluntary and not mandatory. A shelter that operated at Topsail Elementary School closed Thursday night because it had been unused with most evacuees going to hotels or friends' homes instead. The shelter will be reopened if needed, and anyone needing shelter should call 259-1515.
• If people need to move livestock, an animal shelter is operating at the Sampson County Livestock Arena for cattle, goats, sheep, horses and poultry, though not pigs. People should call 604-3378 if they need to take animals there.
• An open burning ban remains in place for the area.
• Residents east of Interstate 95 could experience unhealthy air quality, and people are advised to avoid or reduce prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors if they can see and smell smoke. Very dense smoke is expected for drivers on roads downwind and within 10 miles of the fire.
• Donations of water, sports drinks and snacks are being collected to give to firefighters. Drop-off spots are: the Burgaw Chamber of Commerce, 115 S. Dickerson St., Pender Memorial Hospital, 507 E. Fremont St. and Burgaw Police Department, 109 N. Walker St.

That is the continuing situation unfolding in the rural Holly Shelter area as residents and emergency management officials grapple with what many say will be a long-lasting effort to contain the blaze.
The fire has scorched 21,336 acres and is only 10-percent contained, forestry officials said Thursday night.
It sent smoke billowing up 19,000 feet in the air, creating a drift that was expected to stretch as far away as Maryland and Delaware.
"We're at the mercy of the weather right now," said Tom Collins, director of Pender County's emergency management department, which has helped coordinate resources to attack the blaze. "It will burn all summer long or until we get enough rain."
The arid soil in the Holly Shelter Game Land continued to feed what officials are calling the Juniper Road fire because that is where they believe a lighting strike started the fire Saturday. Given its vast size and rapid expansion, officials have begun drawing similarities between the current fire and the one that struck Holly Shelter in 1986, charring 73,000 acres.

The Daily Advance of Elizabeth City reports that a ban on plastic bags at grocery stores and other businesses is set to resume on July 1. The ban had been suspended after a tornado destroyed a Food Lion distribution center in Dunn. The facility was a hub for the chain's supply of paper bags. State Sen. Stan White, D-Dare, says many stores haven't seemed to notice the ban has been suspended and have kept using paper bags. The ban was enacted in 2009 for Outer Banks businesses in Currituck, Hyde and Dare counties.
