Drill Ceramic Tile

Bathroom fixtures

Attaching towel rails, loo roll holders and hooks to bathroom walls can be tricky depending on the surface and structure behind the wall.

If the wall is tiled you will need to drill through the tiles, don’t be tempted to drill into the grout, it wont give a strong enough fixing over time.

For ceramic tiles a normal masonry drill used at a slow drilling speed will suffice.  If you have porcelain or marble tiles then masonry drills won’t cut it (literally!). You will need to use special tile drill bits available in DIY or tile stores. Even these will only drill a few holes before they have to be thrown away.

Cover the area with masking tape to stop the drill skating across the surface. Start drilling slowly, take out the drill and cool it with water every few seconds. Once the hole is drilled use a good quality wall plug, don’t over-tighten the fixing and you will have a solid long lasting fixing.
