Child Development Center Opens at Naval Air Station Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (NNS) -- A June 9 ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house officially opened the new $10 million, state-of-the-art, Naval Air Station Jacksonville Child Development Center.

The ceremony began as NAS Jax Public Works Officer Bill Siemer thanked the guests for attending the event and discussed some of the highlights of the new center.

"This was design-build military construction contract awarded in June 2009 for a little over $7 million. Since then we've incorporated some pretty significant energy upgrades into the project. The Navy realized the savings in energy costs so we reinvested money into existing contracts for energy upgrades," said Siemer.

"This has been a great partnering success. All the stakeholders including NAS Jax, Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southeast, Morale, Welfare and Recreation, Commander, Navy Region Southeast, Sauer Inc. and VOA Associates collaborated to optimize the CDC's design and functionality and provide a safe and clean environment for staff and students here," he added.

Siemer then introduced Sauer Inc. Project Manager Josh Bates to the podium. "It's been great to be part of this construction project. With every project there are hiccups but thanks to the partnership, communication and coordination between everyone involved the design process went smoothly, items were clarified and we were even given another project to install solar energy panels on the parking garage about six months before we were completed. We are appreciative of the great relationship on this project," said Bates.

NAS Jax Commanding Officer Capt. Jeffrey Maclay also thanked everyone for their hard work and dedication to getting this project completed and stressed the importance of having a top-notch child care facility.

"The bottom line is that the Navy and NAS Jacksonville are committed to family readiness and we know that directly equates to combat readiness. When are Sailors and Marines are out on the battlefront and they know that their children are well-cared for and protected here, then they can do what they need to do while deployed," said Maclay.

After several songs from pre-schoolers currently enrolled in the CDC and the officially ribbon-cutting, guest were invited to tour the new facility.

"Our daughter attended the old CDC and now our son will be attending this new center.
