CommunicAsia- “Gong on” for day 1 of the Singapore experience ...

As tired as I was, I did not expect the heat and humidity. My next shock was the beauty of the island and the lack of congestion. Singapore is about one sixth the geographic area of Ottawa, but six times the population. I was expecting Hong Kong: traffic, congestion, “fog”, noise, but instead got the Ottawa experience, a beautiful city that was vibrant but not crowded and congested. The Hong Kong feel was there, in the ever competing office buildings to set new height records and condominiums everywhere. Our hotel, the Marina Bay Sands has over 2000 rooms and a swimming pool on the 57th floor where you can swim up and look over the city.

Enough of that Canadian habit about complaining about the weather and gawking at the tall buildings, we are here to work.

Our first working day was excellent. We were in the hands of the Canadian High Commission in Singapore who had put together a program for the Canadian companies attending CommunicAsia. The first part of the program was much appreciated. Twenty-five of the companies exhibiting at the Canadian Pavilion got to know about each other as well as get a briefing from our Trade Commissioners handling ICT in the various countries within the Singapore Region. This was followed by the High Commission inviting in over 200 companies from the region for a Partnering Forum with the companies. The companies got to brief the audience and then had the opportunity to meet with those interested in their technologies at individual tables during the reception that followed. A great way to get the conference underway and get an early start on making connections.

A highlight of the day was Guy Belanger and his gong. Guy is the ICT lead at the High Commission and was the MC for the day. Anybody knows that trying to keep over 30 speakers on time is a formidable task. People just can’t stop talking when they have the microphone. Guy had a gong and threatened that anybody who went over wasn’t going to get a polite hand signal but the gong. It worked, after the first person got gonged, people kept to their time limit!

Being from a hockey country, we have to give the stats. There are almost 70 Canadian companies at CommunicAsia, many exhibiting in the Canadian pavilion and most veterans of exhibiting at the show. Of the 25 companies that attended the Partnering Forum, 8 had major R&D units in Ottawa (the largest regional representation) and six had head offices (tied with Vancouver). Over 60% of the companies were from Ontario.
