Buck knows losing, says Florida Marlins above it

Was on a Kansas City Royals team that lost 19 consecutive games in 2005. Buck said that losing spell wasn’t nearly as difficult to explain — or even endure — as the Marlins’ June nosedive.

“In Kansas City, it was expected,” Buck said. “If we lost games the way we’re losing games now, they would be happy with it. We just flat out weren’t as good as other teams. We had a lot of guys that just weren’t ready to be in the big leagues. We have guys that belong here. We have guys that should win here.”

When they dropped a 5-1 decision to the Mariners on Friday, it was their franchise-record 21st defeat of the month against only two victories.

Even with five games remaining on their June schedule (including Saturday), the Marlins cannot match the National League mark for losses in one month. That stands at 27 and was reached by three teams, most recently the 1939 Philadelphia Phillies.

But, depending on Saturday’s outcome, they could finish 2-26, which would be the most losses in a month since the Minnesota Twins went 3-26 in May 1982.

The major-league record for most losses in a month is 29, which was set in 1909 by the Washington Senators.

Buck doesn’t think the Marlins belong in that company.

“I just think it’s more of we’re underachieving of what we’re capable of doing,” he said.

pitch off his bat in the second inning of Friday’s game, McKeon hopped out of the dugout claiming the pitch struck Infante in the hand.

“No question he got hit in the hand,” McKeon said. “It was swelled up when the umpire saw it. He [Barry] said he thought it hit the bat. I said ‘That looks like a pretty good bat.

Florida Marlins: Predictions, early schedule, and links – Florida ...

The Marlins are taking batting practice under the Sun Life Stadium lights as a type, getting acclimated to the conditions they’ll get in Friday’s season opener against the New York Mets. Figured this is a good time to get a few predictions out there. I find them pretty pointless, considering all it takes is one injury to wreck the most well conceived vision of how a season might unfold.

Nonetheless, I hate to pass up this annual opportunity to look like a genius or, more often, like an idiot. Here’s what I’ve got:

Marlins finish: 86-76, third in NL East. I would expect them to remain in the conversation through mid-September, but I think this core group of young hitters is a year away from really putting it together. The rotation should be outstanding, and if that’s the case the bullpen be better if for no other reason than a decreased workload.

NL playoffs: Braves, Reds, Giants, Phillies (wild card). The Phillies injuries to Chase Utley and Brad Lidge scare me. I don’t think Jayson Werth is worth what the Nationals gave him, but the Phillies are still going to miss him. The Braves with a healthy Chipper Jones and a serviceable Nate McLouth seem to me like the most complete team in the division. Wouldn’t surprise me if Tommy Hanson pitches his way into Cy Young contention.

AL playoffs: Yankees, White Sox, Athletics, Red Sox (wild card). The Red Sox are too good not to make the playoffs, but too many people are sleeping on the Yankees. Love the Red Sox’s lineup, but Beckett has proved fragile in the rotation and who knows what they get from Matsuzaka start to start. Lester is an ace, and Buchholz has to show he can do it back-to-back years.

World Series: Athletics beat Braves. What’s the point of predicting the Red Sox and Phillies like everyone else? Actually, I’m big on the Athletics this year. Love the pitching staff, especially once Andrew Bailey gets back. The big question is whether they’ll hit enough. Weren’t we asking the same question of the Giants this time last year?…

Favorable early schedule: Every team this time of year talks about the importance of getting off to a good start. The Marlins are particularly well positioned to do it.

Starting with Friday’s season opener against the Mets, the Marlins’ first nine games and 12 of their first 18 are against teams that finished below .500 in 2010. They also play 15 of 26 April games at home.
