Loudoun Preservation Society Announces Sponsors For 19th Century Base Ball Day

PRLog (Press Release) May 31, 2011 – LEESBURG, Va., --The Loudoun Preservation Society announced sponsors for one of the most exciting new events coming to the D.C. region on Sunday, June 12 at Oatlands (20850 Oatlands Plantation Lane, Leesburg, Va. 20175).  “19th Century Base Ball Day” will feature teams from the Mid Atlantic Vintage Base Ball League in a game with no gloves, no helmets, no catching gear, no manicured diamonds—just as the game was played in the 19th century.

Sponsors for the event include: Presenting Sponsor Tuskies Dining Group (owners of Tuscarora Mill, Magnolias at the Mill, Fire Works Pizza, and South Street Down Under).   Mid Atlantic Sports Network and OpenBand are partnering for Gold Sponsorship.  Silver sponsors include the Loudoun Hounds, National Conference Center, and Trump National Golf Club.  AH&T Insurance is a Bronze Sponsor.

“We are so grateful for the support of these local businesses,” stated Lori Kimball, president of LPS.  “Like LPS, they are a part of our community and their partnership enables us to bring this unique event to Loudoun.”

19th  Century Base Ball Day takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be held rain or shine, at Oatlands (20850 Oatlands Plantation Lane, Leesburg, Va. 20175). This unique, family-friendly event will feature actual players, playing by the rules and customs of the 1860s: no gloves, no helmets, and no catching gear. Uniforms and equipment are authentic replicas of that time period. Bases were used but games were not played on the manicured diamonds we are familiar with today. If there were ditches and creeks on the field, the players rose to the occasion and played through them.

The action gets underway with the Chesapeake and Potomac Nine Base Ball Clubs playing the Elkton Eclipse Base Ball Club in a mini-tournament of three games starting at 11 a.m.  Historically, the day was a social event and 19th Century Base Ball Day will be the same. There

will be food vendors, exhibitors, and information booths to interest and entertain attendees when not watching base ball. Fans, or “cranks” as they were originally called, are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs to watch the games.  Admission will be $20 per car, van, or motorcycle; $50 per bus. (No alcohol or pets, please.

Synthetic tactical t-shirts have to provide more than just moisture-wicking properties to be considered acceptable for military and law-enforcement tactical use. In 2006 the Marine Corps banned troops from wearing non-fire-resistant synthetic clothing while on tactical operations because the clothing can melt, drip and compound injuries when exposed to very high heat.

In response to the ever-growing demand for synthetic t-shirts that are fire resistant and fire retardant, many companies are offering clothes that claim to possess those properties. The August 21, 2006 issue of the Marine Corps Times tested five flame-resistant tactical t-shirts and chose a shirt from Potomac Field Gear (PFG) as the winner, based on smell, drying, shrinkage, comfort and tactical value.

Now Under Armour (UA) has joined the growing ranks of companies offering tactical t-shirts with fire-resistant or fire-retardant properties. As part of UA’s effort to extend its reach to the tactical military and law enforcement gear arena, the company recently added a flame retardant long-sleeve t-shirt to its line of tactical heat gear. The fabric is noticeably thicker and has a different feel than the standard you are used to seeing at the sporting goods store. But how does it perform?

To find out if it performs and to see how its flame-retardant properties compare, a test was devised to compare the new UA shirt with a shirt from PFG.

At first glance, the shirts seem like similar products. UA promotes its shirt as being fire-retardant, durable and offering “odor-free moisture transport.” PFG advertises its t-shirt as fire-resistant, moisture-wicking, anti-odor, anti-microbial and anti-static.

The fabric on both shirts feels more like cotton than does a standard synthetic shirt, though neither is an exact match for the natural fiber. The UA fabric is considerably heavier than the PFG fabric—so much so that it caused me to wonder how it would wear and breathe on a warm day. For starters, let’s get the record straight between “fire resistant” and “fire retardant.” PFG promotes its shirt as fire resistant. Dictionary.com defines fire resistant as “totally or almost totally unburnable.” UA promotes its new shirt as fire retardant. Dictionary.com defines retardant as “able to slow or check the spread of destructive fire.”  While these are not identical claims, the properties described are close enough to merit a head-to-head test.
