Azusa park unveils plans for camp sites, nature trails

The Watershed Conservation Authority unveiled its proposal, the Canyon Inn property, which draws visitors for its stunning views of the San Gabriel River.

"It's a gateway to the forest that offers the opportunity to experience the river in its more natural state," said Jane Beesley, acting executive officer of the WCA and the San Gabriel River Center Authority. "It's kind of a chance to learn about the wilderness without actually being in the wilderness."

Plans include some habitat restoration, creating easier access to views of the river, extending the bike path leading into the park's parking lot, and the construction of a pedestrian crosswalk and turn-around at Highway 39, which provides access to the area, officials said.

Officials also envision activities for children, including a day camp, a cafe and a restroom area.

The WCA's governing board must still approve the proposal; board members could vote on it by the end of the year, Beesley said. If approved, the agency would acquire grant and private donations to fund the $9 million project, she said.

With the sounds of the rushing river in the background, landscape architect Lacey Withers detailed the different portions of the plan before 40 interested people set off to hike and tour the area on a recent Saturday.

One area that drew special interest was Azusa Springs, which the WCA plans to restore and allow visitors to camp overnight.

"It's a lovely pond of water that makes you feel like you're in another world," Withers said.

Several people were thrilled to have a new recreation area.

Here are just a few reasons why I would recommend it to you.

You can find pop campers in a wide range of sizes and prices. They come in sizes perfect for an individual person, a couple or a family. They can be simple and be used as a place to sleep however, many of the updated campers now also have air conditioning, sink, dining area and some of the newer models even have full bathrooms including a shower.

Activities

There’s lots to do if you use Hollands Wood Campsite as your base.

You are only a 10 minute walk into the lovely New Forest village of Brockenhurst. Here there are local shops like the marvellous butcher and greengrocer to buy your camp food (or the little Tesco if you run out of shampoo!).

There are tea rooms and shops to buy gifts and lots of little shops to just look in.

Pop campers provide comfortable accommodations that are much more secure then a tent. They usually come with netting or screens that allow of maximum air flow and light but will help keep unwanted critters and insects from getting to you or your food. They come with open screens as well as privacy screens for the windows so that other campers can’t see inside of your camper. Most campers will unfold at the ends creating two sleeping areas. These fold out sleeping areas range in size from a single sized bed  to a king sized bed. A lot of the new campers have 2 king “fold out” beds. Usually, the dining area can also be converted into a sleeping area too. This is great for families with children as there is a lot of room for everyone!

Places to visit

You can visit some great places if you base your stay at Hollands Wood campsite.

Beaulieu Motor Museum is a great day out for all the family.

Paultons Park is off the New Forest but would really appeal to all the family as it is a theme park.
