HM, GM create partnership

YOUNGSTOWN - Jane Schmader drives past the sprawling General Motors Co. Lordstown Complex constantly in her job as a home health worker for Humility of Mary Health Partners.

The difference now is she'll be doing it in a new Chevrolet Cruze, the small car made at Lordstown.

''It'll be less wear-and-tear on our (personal) cars. It'll be a savings for us," the Austintown resident said Thursday before driving away in the 2011 Cruze after a news conference announcing a 28-car deal between the hospital system and GM.

Schmader, who handles Trumbull County home health calls, said the shiny silver cars also will benefit homebound patients because the cars will be reliable, reducing the risk of breakdowns.

Jim Graham, president of Local 1112 at the Lordstown East assembly plant, noted the cars are among the safest on the road, thanks to 10 airbags and other safety features.

During a time of rising gasoline prices, the cars also are among the most fuel-efficient on the road, officials said.

Hospital and GM officials called the program a winning formula for all parties.

"When the Mahoning Valley's two largest employers come together, it's a win-win," Don Koenig, Humility's vice president of operations, told a crowd gathered on the top of the St. Elizabeth Hospital's visitors parking deck, where the Cruzes were parked.

"We are pleased and proud that Humility of Mary Health Partners recognizes the value of our plant, our product and our people to this community," Lordstown Complex Plant Manager Bob Parcell said.

Dave Green, president of Local 1714 of the Lordstown West Metal Center, praised the teamwork between two pillars of the community.

HMHP has nearly 4,000 workers, while the GM complex employs more than 5,000. Both Humility of Mary and Chevrolet are 100 years old this year.

Koenig said the hospital system's first plan called for vehicles that weren't made at Lordstown. He said GM leaders worked out a way for the hospital system to use the Cruzes, the nation's best-selling car so far this year.

The cars were bought by Enterprise Fleet Management for slightly less than $400,000, Area Sales Manager Dan Lord said.

The company, which works with Humility of Mary's Cincinnati-based parent, Catholic Health Partners, leases the cars to Humility, and will handle the maintenance, licensing and other support, he said.

The program will save Humility of Mary about $17,000 a year from the previous system of reimbursing workers for mileage they put on their own vehicle, said Michael Robinson, who directs the home health services operation and spearheaded the effort to use Cruzes.

Humility of Mary Health Partners Part of Top 10 Health Systems in ...

(Vocus) July 15, 2010

For the second year in a row, Catholic Healthcare Partners (CHP), parent company of Humility of Mary Health Partners (HMHP), has been named one of the nations Top 10 health systems by Thomson Reuters . The recognition is based on the clinical performance of CHPs hospitals including St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown; St. Joseph Health Center, Warren; and St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center, Boardman.

This national recognition affirms HMHPs commitment to providing quality health care for the communities we serve, said Bob Shroder, president and CEO, HMHP. We are proud to be part of CHP and the systems commitment to excellence and quality health care.

According to Thomson Reuters, Top 10 health systems had 12.3% fewer mortalities, 13.2% fewer complications and 5.4% better patient safety than peer systems. In addition, patients returned home sooner with average lengths of stays more than a half day shorter than similar systems, and with better longer-term outcomes.

Top 10 health systems outperformed their peers by a wide margin. They provided better care, saved more lives, had fewer medical complications, and made fewer patient safety errors even though they treat sicker patients, on average. They set the standard for the industry, says Dean Chenoweth, senior vice president, Performance Improvement and 100 Top Hospitals Programs for Thomson Reuters.

We are honored to be recognized for the second consecutive year as a Thomson Reuters Top 10 Health System, said Michael Connelly, president & CEO, CHP. CHP is the largest health system in the top 10, the only Catholic system and one of only three multi-state systems to earn this important, independently verified recognition. We are delighted at this recognition of our continuing efforts to improve and enhance clinical quality and patient safety.

Researchers from the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals analyzed quality and efficiency of 252 health systems across the country to identify the top 10. Because the award is based on analysis of objective clinical data, health systems cannot apply for and do not pay to receive the Thomson Reuters award.

The Thomson Reuters study assessed all US health systems with two or more short-term, general, non-federal hospitals. Researchers looked at eight metrics that gauge clinical quality and efficiency. These include: Mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average length of stay, adherence to clinical standards of care (evidence-based core measures published by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services), 30-day mortality rate, 30-day readmission rate and HCAHPS patient satisfaction. Three of the criteria are new for this year both 30-day measures and patient satisfaction.
