History of the Christian Union Church's Horse-Drawn Hearse
In 1871, the board of the Christian Union Church (now the Portsmouth Historical Society Museum) authorized the purchase of a hearse. Board member Richard Schmidt, portraying Brother John T. Brown, the first caretaker of the hearse, will discuss the history of the horse-drawn hearse and the Society’s efforts to conserve this unique piece of Portsmouth’s history. Light refreshments served following lecture.

A horse-drawn hearse took Joel "Joey" Schlegel to his final resting place. Schlegel passed away last week at age 61. He used to run the Featherhill Tack Shop in Lenhartsville.
