KEARNEY — University of Nebraska at Kearney football coach Darrell Morris has announced the names of 12 transfers and six recent high school graduates who will play for the Lopers this season.
The group includes five transfers from the defunct University of Nebraska at Omaha program, and two former Kearney Hub Players of the Year — Kearney Catholic graduate Matt Bowman and Ravenna graduate Josh Crowell.
Bowman was the 2009 Hub Territory Defensive Player of the Year. He attended Kansas State University last year, where he was a walk-on defensive end. For the Stars, he set a single-season record with 202 tackles and finished with 450 in his career.
Crowell, the 2009 Hub Territory Offensive Player of the Year, attended Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, last year. He played quarterback at Ravenna but is listed as a wide receiver at UNK. Last year, Crowell rushed for 466 yards and four touchdowns on a Morningside squad that went 10-2 and qualified for the NAIA playoffs.
The transfers from UNO are defensive backs Jared Boston and Kelby Seyl, outside linebacker Trey Wilberger, defensive lineman Dex Schwieger and tight end Kalvin Zoucha.
Boston (5-foot-11, 175 pounds), Seyl (5-9, 170) and Zoucha (6-4, 220) have each taken a redshirt year at UNO while Schwieger and Wilberger were two of the Mavericks tackle leaders in 2010.
A safety for the Mavs, Wilberger (6-2, 210) made two starts last fall and finished with 38 tackles, seventh most on the team. He also scooped up a blocked punt and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown in a win over Emporia State. He is the brother of Nebraska Cornhuskers volleyball player Jordan Wilberger.
Schwieger (6-4, 265) made 31 tackles, including 1.5 for loss, and blocked a kick.
The other transfers are defensive end Jordan Knutson from Colorado State, receiver Tommy Flanagan from South Dakota, receiver Dillon Schrodt from the Nebraska Cornhuskers, inside linebacker Pat Kelly from Grossmont College, Calif., and defensive lineman Evan Landell, a Shelton graduate, from Doane.

Ravenna sailor takes part in Japanese relief » WeNewsIt
Growing up in Ravenna, Kris Yost dreamed of serving his country, which led him to pursue a career in the U.S. Navy.
What he couldn’t have known at the time was that one of the defining moments of his service would be the time he spent helping another nation in need.
Yost, a lieutenant junior grade in the U.S. Navy, participated in Operation Tomadachi, a humanitarian and disaster relief mission in Japan after the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in March.
“It was a challenging period of time, but It is something that I will be proud of the rest of my life” Yost wrote in an email. “When you live abroad, at first you are surrounded by strangers. Before long though, they become neighbors and then friends.”
Yost was stationed aboard the USS Shiloh, a Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser, in Japan in December. After the earthquake and tsunami hit, the sailors on the USS Shiloh used two embarked Navy helicopters to deliver food, water and other essential supplies to northern Japan.
“The Japanese people are wonderful,” he said. “Our hearts broke for them after the events of March 11 and being able to lend assistance was an honor. It really made me proud to not only be an American but to be a part of the United States Navy.”
After its one month humanitarian mission, the USS Shiloh stayed in Japan, but its crew is now focused on ballistic defense. Yost said the U.S. Navy is able to use the ship in a variety of ways.
“Shiloh is a very capable ship,” he said. “Not only do we have the ability to perform missile defense, air defense and anti-submarine warfare, we are capable of accomplishing a lot of unique missions like we were able to do following the earthquake and tsunami.”
Prior to arriving in Japan, Yost had served on the guided missile destroyer USS Ramage in Norfolk, Va. for two and a half years.
Yost made his decision to enter the navy while attending Ravenna High School, which he graduated from in 2002. He then graduated from the University of Akron in 2006.
“I have always believed in America and wanted to be a part of something that directly played a role in ensuring that the children of future generations believe in America as well,” he said.
