Celebrating Canada Day with style takes on new meaning when you drape yourself in Canadian fashion.

Although some may feel that it’s impossible to buy clothing that is both designed and made in Canada, many designers and manufacturers are raising the flag and the bar with Canadian-made fashions that are held in high esteem both at home and abroad.

“Made in Canada still means something to the savvy consumer in Canada and everywhere else in the world we sell our clothing. It’s much easier to change and evolve when you keep things close to home … We’re able to ensure the workmanship and quality of our merchandise is extremely high, yet still be very competitive with our pricing,” says Joseph Ribkoff, the founder of a 54-year-old Quebec-based company of the same name that sells its Canadian-created clothing both domestically and in some 40 others markets around the globe.

Canadians who design and make their fashions locally may be on the edge of a growing grassroots trend toward supporting locally made and produced goods.

“I’m seeing a real trend amongst women aged twenty to forty, who are actively choosing to buy and wear fashions that are Canadian-made,” says B.C. native Hayley Gibson, who designs and produces her Birds of North America line in Montreal.

Well-established Toronto-based designers Judy Cornish and Joyce Gunhouse design and produce their well-received Comrags collections locally with some of the same sewers they’ve worked with for as many as 28 years.

“We’re proud of the fact that Comrags has always been produced in Toronto,” says Comrags co-designer Joyce Gunhouse.
