Youth achieve financial literacy goals
More than a dozen youth now have the tools to achieve financial self-sufficiency thanks to a 15-hour workshop sponsored by the Department of Health and Human Services' Independent Living Skills program.
Students celebrated their graduation by opening savings accounts.
The youth started the workshop learning the difference between what they need and what they want. They were asked questions about income, credit, banking and insurance. A 15-question pre-test helped instructors determine what areas needed the most work.
”Through a partnership with California Connected by 25 Initiative, Humboldt County CFS designed a financial literacy program addressing the unique needs of foster youth,” said Carolyn Albee, social worker supervisor for Humboldt County Children and Family Services. “This is a youth-friendly program with great outcomes.”
Teachers and speakers were from the Department of Health and Human Services, Consumer Credit Counseling Service, the Humboldt County Office of Education and Coast Central Credit Union.
”The youth were awesome,” said Rosie Wentworth, program development director for Consumer Credit Counseling Service. “They came to the workshops, participated and gained insight and know-ledge about financial literacy that they didn't have in the beginning.
”This is such important information for our youth to be getting before they go out on their own. Money is something that they have to deal with every day of their lives. I'm very pleased to be part of a team that is bringing this information to our youth,” Wentworth said.
Students attended five three-hour sessions and were offered prizes for good attendance. One student told the instructors she was very happy she took the class.
”I can't believe this isn't required in every high school,” the student said.
