“I had high hopes,” Rabatin said. “We started out strong then we hit the rain and the rain hit us back.” Rabatin said the Raiders had 17 rainouts and practiced outside only three times all season. But she is optimistic about next year as Shaker Heights

The Cleveland Heights native and Heights High grad originally went to school for pharmacy. Her father was a pharmacist, and that was also her husband Larry's major and profession. “I went to the University of Toledo and studied pharmacy.

But Laurel never inherited his basketball skills, as Winston was a center for his high school team at Glenville and during his college days at Western Reserve. Laurel, meanwhile, was perhaps the least athletic among her three siblings.
Shaker Heights softball team can't maintain hot start | cleveland.com
It was a very fragmented season for the Shaker Heights softball team.
Third-year coach Amanda Rabatin got the Raiders off to a 5-0 start, but they couldn’t keep the momentum going as Shaker Heights finished 7-7 and 6-4 in the Lake Erie League Lake Division, which was good for fourth place. The Raiders lost to Mentor in a Division I sectional semifinal that took more than a week to play. The game was postponed in the middle because of rain and the Raiders didn’t finish up the contest until more than a week later.
“I had high hopes,” Rabatin said. “We started out strong then we hit the rain and the rain hit us back.”
Rabatin said the Raiders had 17 rainouts and practiced outside only three times all season.
But she is optimistic about next year as Shaker Heights loses just four seniors.
“I think we can do really well,” Rabatin said. “I’d really like to see us win the LEL in our last year.”
Shaker Heights is leaving the LEL for the Northeast Ohio Conference after next season.
The four seniors who are graduating are: first baseman Danielle Swales , third baseman Lindsay White , center fielder Olivia Taylor and left fielder Emily Longman . Swales is a four-year letterman and was the team’s No. 2 hitter.
“It’s sad to see her go,” Rabatin said.
White was the team’s captain as she hit .390 with two homers, two triples, five doubles and 14 RBIs.
“She was the leader on the field for us,” Rabatin said. “She can hit the ball a country mile.”
Rabatin said the four players are leaving a void that isn’t limited to playing on the field.
“It’s more than just missing them on the field, it’s leadership,” Rabatin said.
But she’s also excited to see some less experienced, but talented players try to step into those shoes.
And there are some pretty talented and experienced players returning as well.
That starts with pitcher Mia Wang , who led the Raiders in the middle of the diamond as a freshman.
“Coming into high school, she played a lot of 16U (in the summer) to prepare for high school,” Rabatin said. “I’m very impressed with what she did. She needs to work on consistency and reduce the number of walks.
